Prompt 1: The cultural artifact i chose to represent gender is "If I were a boy" by Beyonce. The music video shows us what happens when men and women switch roles. It
depicts how a man would feel if his partner did what he would be doing behind
her back. Then at the end of the video they switch back to their original
roles.
Prompt 2: The music video is saying that men tend to be the
one who aren’t loyal in a relationship, they tend to push boundaries with
fidelity meanwhile the women are the ones who are the most dedicated to the
relationship. It reinforces that women are seen as crazy in a relationship,
there is one part of the video in specific that demonstrates this. The part
after Beyoncé is seen at the club with another man and is confronted, her
response is “Why you tripping it’s not like I’m sleeping with him”. It makes it
seem like the assumptions her partner was making were ridiculous. The video and
the song seem to go more along the lines of traditional ideas about gender and
gender expression as I mentioned before it shows women to be more sensitive and
dedicated in a relationship while men are more so nonchalant and careless about
it. It also depicts the traditional partnership between a woman and a man. More
so towards the end of the music video it shows Beyoncé making him food while he
just got some and left, not even helping her pick up the plates or anything so
that also reinforced the traditional idea that women are the ones who are meant
to cook.
Prompt 3: When I first watched the video, it resonated with
me. I have always seen women be represented as being more sensitive than men,
I’ve also seen men cheat more than women or at least that’s what media
(twitter) tends to show the most. Therefore, it makes me feel comfortable with
being sensitive and expressing my feelings and thoughts about what’s bothering
me because I know since I am a girl society sees that as normal.
Prompt 4: The cultural object I have chosen is the music
video of If I were a boy. The social world it exists and acts on is media in
modern music seeing as to how the song and video aren’t too old and it’s still
played today by several individuals. The creators of this cultural object is Beyoncé
and her writers and producers for the videos also the people of YouTube who
allowed the video to be posted. I believe the receiver is her fans, really any
one who listens to her music but mainly it’s for girl’s. There are so many
girls that can probably relate to her situation and the song and those are the
main receivers.
Hey Priscilla! I agree with what you said about women often being the depiction of crazy or overbearing in a relationship because they are typically more emotional than the man. This video does a great job at presenting the issues that women face not only in relationships but also in the media with being depicted in a certain light. I like that it went back and forth with the role reversals because it provides the audience with a sense of what women will often face in relationships of infedility. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI agree how the media makes a women seen crazy and insecure. It is also glorified and acceptable for a man to cheat on their woman. I believe woman can be part of the blame because so females will forgive a man and also give them a second chance. As a woman, we need to not stand for any cheating in their relationships. We have come a long way with educating our younger youth and showing them respect, but I also feel that this is also a cultural thing. The trends of cheating within the minority culture is very common. We need more woman in higher positions to educate our female youth on self respect, education and credibility. Females much show respect for each other and respect other people relationships. It takes two to tangle, but if woman show self respect, maybe the males will not cheat on them? However, if a woman cheats on their man, they are known to be sluts and will have a reputation. If a man can cheat, why can't a woman? I believe it is wrong for both genders to cheat. As a society, we need to show respect and appreciate each other in a relationships. If the relationship is not working out, I believe one should leave the relationship with self respect.
ReplyDeleteOn top of showing the cheating side of story, this music video also shows traditional gender roles for males and females; How males are the ones who are supposed to work and females are the ones who are suppoed to cook. Females are the insecure ones and the men are the lying ones. The music video did a really good job to let people of both sexes to see the story of the other side.
ReplyDeleteHey Priscilla! I think you chose a great example that shows gender roles of both men and women. I also like how this song shows what it would be like if those roles were switched between a man and a woman. I believe it is apart of society's culture to cheat and even encouraged by other men. Your analysis really showed the story of both sides.
